In the short film, the E39 in question is the top-of-the-line M5 trim with the torquey V8. I did not get that car. I also did not get the entry-level 525 or 528i (Mercedes got one of those, and it’s also excellent, no disrespect). I got the 530i with the Sport Package, which pairs BMW’s famous M54 inline-six with a five-speed manual.

M5 does 186mph at 6500 rpm, with 6th gear at 0.827, and a 3.15 rear end. It can push that fast, so it appears to be to gear limited. My car's 5th gear is 0.80, but with a rear of 3.45, overall I'm geared too high to match the M5. My calculator started to smoke, but I came up with 174.5mph at 6500rpm for my setup.

Top speed is limited to 155mph but without this limiter the 530i has been known to hit speeds of 156, perhaps even 156.5mph I have to say I think the E39 530i sport is the best BMW ever made
